VCR Tape Storage Cabinet

This project was constructed in response to the wife's demand to find a suitable way to store all the VCR Tapes in a storage unit that looks good. The VCR Tape Storage Cabinet would set in the family room. So we needed to decide what type of cabinet to make and what finish would compliment our family room decor. We decided to build a cabinet with movable shelving deep enough to contain two deluxe VCR cases. The wife chose the light walnut min wax finish. This project was very straight forward to make and required minimum skill, tools and materials to complete. All materials were purchased new for this project. No scrap was used in this project.

Materials
3 - 1x12's cut to 6 foot lengths.
2 - 1x12's cut to 4 foot lengths.
1 - 1/4"x48"x73" 3 ply plywood for the back.
11 - 1x12's ripped to 10-1/2" wide and cut to 22-3/4".
44 - shelf holders that will fit into 1/4" holes.

The shelves were cut to size as indicated in the Materials Parts List above. The front edge was also rounded using a router and appropriate router bit.
Two rows of 1/4" holes were drilled1/4" deep, 10" from the short edges (top & bottom), 3" from the long edges (front & back) and spaced 2 " apart. The center board was drilled as the side boards except the holes were drilled completely through.
The 4 foot boards were notched at the ends and in the middle so that the 6 foot boards would fit snug on the ends and in the middle. The notch was cut half way though the thickness of the board. Glue was applied to the notch areas and the 6 foot boards were glued to the 4 foot boards at the notch areas with the holes facing toward the center board. The boards were held in place until the glue dried with pipe clamps. After the glued dried and the pipe clamps removed, the back was nailed to the sides and middle board with #17x1" brads.
Two coats of a light walnut stain were applied by application of one coat, allowing one day to dry, then application of the second coat and another day to dry. Eventually Three coats of Min wax Poly Coat was applied according to label directions.
