Hanging Plate Rack

Construction of this project came about when the bookshelf where the plates were displayed became full. Since there was no other place to put the plates the only other option is some sort of hanging display rack. While looking for something in the patio I noticed the what-not-shelf and thought if something like this could be modified for plates then they could be displayed in the same area since there is plenty of wall space to hang things. Several days later an advertisement came in selling plate racks. So the plans and idea was born.

Materials
2 - 1"x3"'s 18 inches long.
2 - 1"x3"'s 28 inches long.
4 - number 10 wooden screws 2" long.
Stain.

Cut 2 1x3's to a length of 18 inches and 2 more to a length of 28 inches. The 18 inch boards make up the sides and the 28 inch boards make up the upper and lower shelves. On the side boards cut an arc at the top and bottom that extends 3 inches from the edge and halfway across the board at the bottom. Router a rounded edge on the front of all four boards. Router a 1/4" groove 1/8" deep in the 28" boards leaving 2" from both ends un grooved. This groove helps hold the plates in place.
A slot the thickness of the boards, was cut into each 28" board 2" from each end and 4" from each end of the 18 inch boards. The shelves were joined at the slots to the side boards with the groove side up and fastened at the slotted joints with a number 10 wooden screw 2" long. The screws were recessed about 1/4" into the slotted joints.
The rack was then finished with a several coats of golden oak stain.
